The catch
The structure changed in 2025: the old single monthly credit became a per-service free cap. Nobody is deceiving you, but 'free tier' here means a metered account with a card attached, not a free product.
The smart play
- Set API restrictions on the key immediately — an unrestricted key found in your frontend gets used by strangers, and billed to you
- Set quota limits per API in the console; those are hard caps, unlike budget alerts
- For a static map or a handful of lookups, OpenStreetMap does it with no card at all

Restrict the key on day one
Maps keys live in frontend code where anyone can read them. An unrestricted key can be lifted and used by strangers against your billing account. Restrict by HTTP referrer or IP and by API, and set per-API quota caps — those are real ceilings, where a budget alert is only a message.
What changed in 2025
The long-standing flat monthly credit was replaced with per-service free caps. For small users the practical result is broadly similar; for anyone modelling costs, the arithmetic is different, so recalculate against the current SKU table rather than the figure you remember.
