Is Headspace actually free?

How these scores work
Free Score (0–100) follows a fixed rubric: cards up front, auto-billing, hard time cutoffs, withheld core features, and paying with your data or attention all deduct points. 90–100 truly free · 70–89 free forever · 45–69 squeezed · 15–44 trial mechanics · under 15 fake or gone. Value (0–10) is editorial: real-world worth of the free offering measured against its paid equivalent. Full rubric on the methodology page.

Barely. There is a permanent free tier — the Beginner Basics course, a few sleepcasts and some breathing exercises — but it is a sample rather than a usable practice. Nearly everything is behind $69.99 a year or $12.99 a month, with 7- and 14-day trials on top.

What it’s worth

Free, you get an introduction. The honest comparison is Insight Timer's 250,000 free tracks or Smiling Mind's complete free app.

What you get free

  • The Beginner Basics course
  • A small selection of sleepcasts and breathing exercises
  • Enough to tell whether the voice and style work for you

In practice: a well-made sample that ends roughly where a habit would start.

Drawbacks

  • The free tier cannot sustain a practice, by design
  • Trials need a card and renew automatically
  • Among the more expensive apps in the category

Also paywalled

  • The great majority of the library
  • The themed and multi-week courses
  • The full sleep and focus catalogues
  • Everything beyond the introductory material

LimitsA small permanent free tier; most content is paid
The real costAn account, and the sense that you have tried it when you have seen a fraction.

The catch

The free tier is honest about existing and misleading about what it is for. It is enough to judge whether the teaching style suits you, which is a real service, and nowhere near enough to build a habit on — which is the design. Note also that the trials are separate from it: starting a trial means a card and a renewal date, while the free tier itself needs neither.

The smart play

  • Use the free tier for what it is good at — deciding whether the style suits you
  • If it does, compare against the apps whose libraries are free before subscribing
  • A trial is not the free tier; it has a card and a date attached

Is Headspace still free?
As of our October 2026 check, partly — and the free tier is squeezed. Barely. There is a permanent free tier — the Beginner Basics course, a few sleepcasts and some breathing exercises — but it is a sample rather than a usable practice. Free tier and free trial are not the same thing
Both exist here and they behave completely differently. The free tier is permanent, needs no card, and is small. The trial is 7 or 14 days, needs a card, and opens everything — then bills. Conflating them is the most common way people end up subscribed to a meditation app they meant to try.

Checked: October 2026 · Verdict: Free-ish — a free tier exists, but it's shaped to squeeze you toward paying.
