Is Strava actually free?

How these scores work
Free Score (0–100) follows a fixed rubric: cards up front, auto-billing, hard time cutoffs, withheld core features, and paying with your data or attention all deduct points. 90–100 truly free · 70–89 free forever · 45–69 squeezed · 15–44 trial mechanics · under 15 fake or gone. Value (0–10) is editorial: real-world worth of the free offering measured against its paid equivalent. Full rubric on the methodology page.

Sort of. Recording activities, seeing them, and following people are all still free. The competitive layer is not: full segment leaderboards, route planning, matched runs and training analysis moved to the subscription, now $79.99 a year or $11.99 a month.

What it’s worth

As a logbook it holds its own against anything free; as a competitive platform it is a paid product with a free entrance.

What you get free

  • Unlimited activity recording from the app or a watch
  • Your own activity history, with no cap
  • The social feed — following, kudos and comments
  • Segment exploration and your own PRs and CRs
  • The top ten on each segment leaderboard

In practice: a free and complete activity log, with the competition sold separately.

Drawbacks

  • The feature most associated with Strava is the paid one
  • Route planning, useful to every cyclist, is paid
  • Free tier has been narrowed more than once, so expect further changes
  • Location history is sensitive; privacy zones need setting up deliberately

Also paywalled

  • Full segment leaderboards beyond the top ten
  • Route planning
  • Matched runs and rides, which compare repeated efforts
  • Monthly trends, comparisons and the full training log
  • Group challenges, moved to the subscription in August 2024

The catch

Strava's free tier was reorganised rather than reduced — you can still record everything and nothing is deleted. What went behind the wall is the reason many people used it: comparing your effort on a segment against everyone else's. Free users still see each segment's top ten, which is enough to know where you are not. The gap between recording your ride and racing it is now the subscription.

The smart play

  • Set your privacy zones around home before your first ride, not after
  • The top ten on a segment is visible free, which answers most of the question
  • Your data exports in bulk — check that before you depend on any platform for years of training history

What a narrowing free tier tells you
Strava has moved the line more than once: leaderboards and routes in one round, group challenges in August 2024. None of it removed your data or stopped you recording. The pattern worth noticing is that the free tier keeps what costs Strava money to run and sells what people are attached to.
The privacy part nobody reads
An activity log is a location history with timestamps, and the default settings have surprised people before. Privacy zones hide a radius around an address; set them up first, because they do not apply retroactively in a way most users expect.

Checked: October 2026 · Verdict: Free-ish — a free tier exists, but it's shaped to squeeze you toward paying.
