The VideoLAN nonprofit, running on donations. The project has publicly refused advertising and bundling money over the years — which is why, uniquely among 'free players,' it has never shipped a toolbar, an ad, or an upsell.
The copycat problem, explained
Because VLC is famous and free, fake versions are the main risk: 'VLC Pro' listings, lookalike download sites, bundled installers. The real one lives at videolan.org and is free on every platform. If money is requested anywhere, you're not looking at VLC.
