After changing hands, Audacity briefly proposed telemetry that angered users; the plan was scaled back after backlash. Current builds keep data collection minimal and optional — check preferences once and move on, or use the community fork Tenacity if you'd rather not think about it.
Formats and the FFmpeg add-on
Out of the box it covers WAV, MP3, and OGG. Installing the free FFmpeg library unlocks nearly everything else (M4A, video-file audio, and more) — a two-minute setup that most users should just do.
