Is Glassdoor actually free?

How these scores work
Free Score (0–100) follows a fixed rubric: cards up front, auto-billing, hard time cutoffs, withheld core features, and paying with your data or attention all deduct points. 90–100 truly free · 70–89 free forever · 45–69 squeezed · 15–44 trial mechanics · under 15 fake or gone. Value (0–10) is editorial: real-world worth of the free offering measured against its paid equivalent. Full rubric on the methodology page.

Sort of — Glassdoor's famous 'give-to-get' policy lets you read a little before a wall demands you contribute: a company review, a salary figure, or an interview report to unlock continued access. The reviews and salary data are real and useful; the toll is your own information.

What it’s worth

Salary-negotiation intel here is worth thousands; the toll is one honest contribution.

What you get free

  • Company reviews, salary ranges, and interview questions — the workplace transparency standard
  • Anonymous posting (publicly) with a free account
  • Job listings alongside the intel

In practice: the best free look inside a company before you interview — priced in a salary datapoint or review of your current employer.

Drawbacks

  • The give-to-get wall interrupts research at the worst moment
  • Identity verification behind anonymous posts is a trust leap
  • Employers pay Glassdoor for branding on the same pages job-seekers trust
  • Salary data skews toward self-selected reporters

Also paywalled

  • Sustained access without contributing (the wall returns)
  • Employer-side branding and analytics tools (paid, for companies)

The real costFree in money; the toll is your own workplace data, and increasingly your identity.

The catch

Give-to-get is honest in its way — the data you want exists because others paid the same toll. The newer friction is identity: since Glassdoor began requiring verified identities behind the scenes (posts stay anonymous publicly), some users worry about the anonymity chain, especially after accounts were linked to its sister job platform.

The smart play

  • Pay the toll with a salary figure — most useful to others, least exposing of you
  • Read reviews by recency and filter by role; a 2019 rant tells you little
  • Cross-check salaries with levels.fyi for tech roles
  • Write your own reviews from a personal email, never a work device

Give-to-get, judged fairly
The wall is why Glassdoor's data exists — pure free-riding would have produced an empty site. As data tolls go, it's proportionate and transparent. The fairer criticism is the employer side: companies pay Glassdoor for enhanced branding on the very pages workers read as neutral, a quieter version of the conflict every review platform carries.

Last checked: July 2026 · Verdict: Free-ish — a free tier exists, but it's shaped to squeeze you toward paying.
