Is Yelp actually free?
How these scores work
Yes for consumers — reading and writing is free. For businesses, claiming and managing a listing is free too. The catch is what happens next: Yelp's sales team is legendary for aggressive ad-package calls, and its 'recommendation software' hides a large share of reviews — disproportionately, many owners claim, when they decline to advertise.
Free both sides at the basic level; Yelp Ads run hundreds monthly for businesses that buy in.
What you get free
- Reading all reviews free, no account
- Writing reviews with a free account
- Businesses: free listing, photos, hours, and responses
In practice: still the restaurant-and-services standard in big US cities — read it, but know that the reviews you see survived a filter run by the company selling the ads.
Drawbacks
- The recommendation filter hides many legitimate reviews
- Aggressive, persistent ad sales calls to listed businesses
- Competitors' ads appear on your free listing unless you pay
Also paywalled
- Yelp Ads (pay-per-click, the sales team will call)
- Removing competitor ads from your own listing page
- Enhanced profile features
Free facts
| Verdict | Free Forever |
| Card required | No |
| Auto-bills | — |
| Account | Account to write; none to read |
| Limits | Free listing; the ad products are the business |
| The real cost | Free for consumers and for a basic business listing. Yelp's revenue is ads sold to those same businesses — famously aggressively. |
The catch
Yelp has always denied that advertising affects which reviews get 'recommended,' and courts have sided with Yelp. But the perception problem is permanent: the same company that filters your reviews also sells you ads, and small-business forums overflow with owners describing hidden 5-stars and surfaced 1-stars after declining a sales pitch.
The smart play
- Click 'not currently recommended' at the bottom of any listing to see the hidden reviews — often revealing
- For restaurants, cross-check Google; Yelp skews harsher
- Business owners: you can't opt out of Yelp — claim the listing so you can at least respond
- Log every sales call; if ad pressure feels like extortion, the FTC takes complaints
